Spasticity is a condition that causes certain muscles to contract continuously.
Medtronic manufactures a medical device called an intrathecal pump that delivers drug therapy to the spinal cord. It is proven to deliver significant relief, but the device requires surgical implantation and can be a difficult conversation since patients are reluctant to have surgery.
Research revealed that it was possible to do an in-office test of the drug therapy and prove to patients that the pump was the best path forward to relieve their pain and suffering. Like the Wright Brothers and Neil Armstrong, patients wouldn’t know what they could achieve until they tried. Using the test as a starting point completely changed the conversation from one held back by fear to one driven by possibilities.
